How to Take Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice traditionally used in Indian cuisine. In recent years, the spice has gained popularity as a natural treatment for a number of health issues, including staph infection, acne and arthritis. Unfortunately, many who discover a great use for turmeric soon find out there is one downside to this alternative remedy: the taste.

If you are currently taking turmeric as a treatment for MRSA infections or other illnesses, you are already aware that this spice can have an off-putting taste. Thankfully, there are a few ways to make the spice more palatable. In all honesty, any turmeric recipe is not going to taste delicious if you are taking a large dose of the spice. However, these recipes with turmeric are meant to mask the taste enough for you to be able to ingest it. Here are a few of my favorite ways to cover the negative taste when using turmeric for medicinal purposes.

Items needed:

  • Honey
  • Orange juice
  • Tomato juice or vegetable juice
  • Tea
  • Hot chocolate
  • Cinnamon
  • Other spices

Recipe #1

Combine one teaspoon of turmeric with two tablespoons of honey and approximately one-half cup of orange juice. Mix well. Drink as a shot and follow with water. The acidity of the orange juice and sweetness of the honey help mask the flavor of turmeric. Drink three times a day.

Recipe #2

Combine one teaspoon of turmeric with a cup of tomato juice or vegetable juice. If desired, add other ingredients to make this drink more like a Bloody Mary (black pepper, celery salt, cayenne pepper, hot sauce). The actual amounts depend on your personal taste and ability to tolerate hot items. Mix well. Follow with a glass of water. Drink three times each day.

Recipe #3

Make turmeric tea by combining hot water with one teaspoon turmeric. Allow a tea bag to steep in the water as directed on the tea bag manufacturer's packaging. Alternately, make your own tea by filling tea bags with your favorite spices. You can also add the turmeric to the tea bag, although this may decrease the actual amount of turmeric you ingest. Follow with water, and drink three times a day.

Recipe #4

Make a spicy hot chocolate drink by adding one teaspoon of turmeric and one-eighth teaspoon of cinnamon to your favorite hot cocoa drink. Cinnamon may cause upset stomach in some individuals, so use this spice with caution. Drink the concoction three times a day.

Note: This article does not contain professional medical advice. Turmeric causes blood-thinning and possible stomach upset, so please exercise caution when using the turmeric or any alternative treatments. Contact your doctor for more advice.

My mother used Tumeric in chick peas to enhance the flavor of both. It's a secret recipe.
